New Bern Rotary Funds African Children’s Clinic
The Rotary Foundation, Rotary Clubs in New Bern and Arts to End Genocide (ATEG) recently completed a new clinic for children in Bamako, Mali, Africa. To expand the services of the new Rotary “City of Children” facility, The Rotary Club of New Bern presented an additional gift of $1500 to train needed health care workers. The clinic has been treating over 3,000 children a month for various medical issues from foot related diseases to malaria. Many are homeless “street children” and others are living in garbage dumps. Most have never before been seen by a doctor or any health care worker. These children are now receiving medical care, food and KLEM shoes. These shoes are produced by women working at the facility as part of the ATEG program called “Heeling Our World,” designed to give women economic empowerment by producing hundreds of pairs of sandal type shoes.
Presenting this check to Mitch Lewis, CEO of ATEG and Heeling our World (L) are Dave Baxter, Rotary Club of New Bern President and Jim Findley, Rotary Past District Governor.
