Craven Arts Council & Gallery is proud to host I’m Not Playing: American Racism and Marginalizing Blackness a solo exhibition by David Byer-Tyre in the Main Gallery of Bank of the Arts. This exhibition features conceptual sculpture artworks with themes relating to African-American history and identity, and will be on display throughout the month of October.The opening reception will be held on Friday, October 10th from 5 – 8 pm at Bank of the Arts.
Born and raised in New Bern, North Carolina, David Byer-Tyre believes that art is an extension of his professional development as an educator, scholar, and community advocate. I’m Not Playing: American Racism and Marginalizing Blackness will feature a variety of materials & techniques, drawing on pop and black culture to examine identity. Most of his artwork examines the historical and social relevance of art objects that represent African-American culture and persons of African descent.
Byre-Tyre has received several degrees for his studies including a doctorate in education from St. John’s University, a Masters in Fine Arts at Long Island University C.W. Post, with a concentration on sculpture and African-American Material Culture, a Bachelors of Fine Arts in sculpture from Georgia State University, and a Bachelors of Arts in Drawing and Painting from St. Augustine College.
Craven Arts Council & Gallery at Bank of the Arts is a public art gallery and council open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm, and every second Friday from 5 – 8 pm for Artwalk. This gallery is free entry to the public.
