Giardino Next Executive Director for Historical Society

The New Bern Historical Society is very pleased to announce that Anthony Giardino will be the new Executive Director for the organization effective May 7. He steps into the shoes of Mickey Miller who is retiring after devoting eight years to the post.

Giardino currently holds the position of Operations Manager at the Society, having joined the organization in 2022 after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps. His 20-year Marine Corps service took him to various global locations including Afghanistan. He is married with three children and lives in the historic DeGraffenried Park neighborhood. He holds a degree from The Citadel.

Historical Society President, Joe Hunt expresses how pleased the entire Board of Directors is with their choice of Giardino. “Anthony is organized, personable, a good communicator, team player, and passionate about New Bern history. We are blessed to have him as a replacement for Mickey Miller.”

Giardino is excited to lead the organization. “I’m thrilled to have this opportunity and I look forward to serving this wonderful community as we continue our important mission celebrating and promoting New Bern’s history.”

Giardino follows Mickey Miller into the position of Executive Director. In her eight years, Miller has seen the organization through Hurricane Florence, the COVID pandemic, the year-long 100th Anniversary celebration and the growth of the Society to more than 1300 members. Under her leadership the Historical Society increased education programs, added new events including the Hallowed Ground Lantern Tour and the History Quest, and improved the organization’s financial posture. President Hunt notes “She worked tirelessly to achieve this list of accomplishments along with the support of our staff and volunteers. Mickey has been a blessing to the Historical Society, and we will be eternally grateful for her dedication and

contributions.” As she prepares to retire, Mickey adds, “It has been an incredible honor to serve the Historical Society and the New Bern community. I’ve been privileged to work with the very best staff, board of directors, and volunteers who are all so passionate about bringing history to life.”
